Fayette County

Originally established by the Territorial Officials in Dubuque in 1837, Fayette County contained 140,000 square miles and extended from the present southern line to Canada and west to the Dakotas, including the present-day states of Minnesota and the Dakotas. Ten years later, it was reduced to its present borders which enclose 720 square miles of beautiful Iowa landscape.

A mixture of farmland and scenic bluff country, Fayette County is "where the hills and prairies meet." One of Iowa's largest state recreational areas, historic Montauk (home of Iowa's 12th Governor), the Federal Aviation Airways Facility (Radar Station), the Faith Mitchell Hat Collection (one of the country's largest) are but a sampling of unique stops in this award winning county.

One of four state-sponsored scenic byways passes through Fayette County. Nature provides the backdrop for festivals and activities planned throughout the year. There's something for everyone - fishing, camping, canoeing, hiking, biking, golfing, hunting, mushrooming, picnicking, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, antiquing, shopping, fine dining....

Wonderful accommodations (bed & breakfasts, motels, cabins, and campgrounds) are available for those wishing to spend the night.

Compromise:  The art of dividing a cake in such a way that everybody
believes he got the biggest piece.

-- Sherry Rothfield

Each suburban wife struggled with it alone. As she made the beds, shopped for groceries, matched slipcover material, ate peanut butter sandwiches with her children, chauffered Cub Scouts and Brownies, lay beside her husband at night—she was afraid to ask even of herself the silent question—“Is this all?”
